India celebrates Raksha Bandhan along with Independence Day

New Delhi: Today India is not only celebrating the 73rd Independence Day, but also Raksha Bandhan and this added to the festivities and joy of 15 August.

At Attari-Wagah border women tied ‘rakhi’ on Border Security Force personnel on the occasion of Raksha Bandhan. Women from across the country visited the borders and tied rakhis on security personnel engaged in the protection f the country.

The Prime Minister Narendra Modi also celebrated Raksha Bandhan today with women and children tying the traditional rakhi on the wrist of Modi. Women from all walks of life and from different parts of the country was part of the celebrations. Even children of all ages came to tie the knot on their ‘protector and elder brother’ Narendra Modi.

Differently-abled children also shared their joy by tying rakis on the Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

Modi’s rakhi sister, Qamar Mohsin Shaikh visited the Prime Minister to tie her rakhi along with a present, a portrait drawn by her husband. Shaikh is a Pakistani origin woman who has been tying rakhi on Narendra Modi for the last 20 years. She said that she is happy to tie the rakhi once every year to elder brother Modi and prays that the whole world recognizes the positive decisions he made and for his health.

Union Minister Harsimrat Kaur Badal celebrated Raksha Bandhan by tying rakhis to security personnel at her residence in Delhi.

Raksha Bandhan falls on the last day of the Hindu lunar calendar month of Shraavana which usually falls on August. It is a traditional Hindu festival celebrated in South Asia and in places influenced by Hindu culture. On this day sisters tie rakhi around the wrists of their brothers symbolically protecting them. It also represents the brother’s duty to protect his sister.
