Kottayam: Reports say that a few days ago an Imam of a Mosque in Thalayolaparambu was brutally assaulted by Social Democratic Party of India (SDPI) activists when the Imam tried to stop them from distributing leaflets that contained fundamental materials.

The Imam has been shifted to a hospital for medical treatment.

SDPI is the political arm of the Popular Front of India, which is a fundamental Islamist group suspected to be behind many terror related activities.

The Mosque authorities were having an argument about the management of the worship center when SDPI workers came to distribute the leaflets. This was strongly opposed by the Imam.

The SDPI workers then threatened the people gathered at the Mosque. When the Imam asked the workers to leave the place of worship he was manhandled by SDPI activists.

The devotees gathered there said that the leaflets contained fundamental and terror related materials. The Imam was trying to stop these leaflets from being distributed when he came under attack.

The police have taken into custody four SDPI workers.

Recently, NIA have conducted raids at SDPI offices and many activists are in custody for terror related activities.
