Chennai: The first international cruise ship from India, named ‘MV Express’, was flagged off from Chennai to Sri Lanka by Union Minister of Ports and Waterways Sarbananda Sonowal on Monday. He also inaugurated the international cruise tourism terminal, which was constructed with a cost of Rs 17.21 crore at Chennai port. The ship, which is about 2,880 square meters, can carry 3,000 passengers.
The blueprint for constructing the cruise ship was signed in 2022. During the inauguration, Minister said that ‘it was creating a new market for the tourism sector by building a new cruise service from Chennai to Sri Lanka’. People can enjoy luxury amenities and entertainment without paying extra charges, he added.
The cruise will do its service in Hambantota, Trincomalee and Kankesanthurai port in Sri Lanka.
