‘Not good for relationships’; EAM Jaishankar condemns Canadian event celebrating the assassination of former PM Indira Gandhi

New Delhi: During a press conference on the nine years of the Modi government, External Affairs Minister (EAM) S Jaishankar expressed criticism against Canada regarding a pro-Khalistani parade that celebrated the assassination of former Prime Minister Indira Gandhi. He emphasised his concern over the space provided to separatists, highlighting its negative impact on the relationship between the two countries.

According to reports, a 5km-long parade organised by Khalistani supporters took place ahead of the 39th anniversary of Operation Bluestar, which took place on June 6, 2023. The parade featured Khalistani flags and posters displaying the word ‘Revenge.’

The EAM also added that “I think there is a bigger issue involved. Frankly, we are at a loss to understand other than the requirements of vote-bank politics, why anybody would do this. I think there is a larger underlying issue about the space which is given to separatists, extremists, and people who advocate violence. I think it is not good for relationships, not good for Canada.”

Following the circulation of a video showcasing the parade tableau, the Canadian High Commissioner in India, Cameron MacKay, condemned the celebration. He expressed his dismay at the event, firmly stating that there is no room for hate in Canada.
