Washington: US Congresswoman Sheila Jackson Lee said on Wednesday that there is a need to join together and unify all the Hindus across America. As she was addressing the first-ever Hindu-American Summit organised at US Capitol Hill, where several Congressional leaders and political advocacy groups backed the community.

Congresswoman Lee acknowledged her growing understanding of divinity and the inherent goodness in all individuals. She praised those who, regardless of their non-Indian heritage, have embraced Hinduism due to its positive teachings and values.

Lee also highlighted the potential for collaboration between the United States and India on democratic issues, noting that both countries have faced challenges but have persevered. She emphasised the need to uphold the principles of democracy and suggested that the faith of Hinduism, with its emphasis on doing well, could contribute to advancing the march of democracy.

During her address, Congresswoman Sheila Jackson Lee assured the Hindu community that their rights would be protected and their faith could be practised without interference. She emphasised the importance of allowing their voices to be heard and promoting peace. Lee expressed her personal belief in these principles and pledged her support to uphold them.

Romesh Japra, the founder and chairman of American4Hindus, highlighted the significance of the event as the first-ever summit for political engagement. He acknowledged the progress made by the Hindu American community in various fields but noted that there was a need for stronger political representation. Japra expressed concerns about perceived discrimination faced by Hindu Americans and emphasised the importance of uniting various organisations to address these issues.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi will be travelling to the US to address a joint meeting of the House of Representatives and Senate in the United States Congress on June 22. This invitation, extended by the leaders of the US Congress, is considered one of the highest honours bestowed upon foreign dignitaries by Washington.
