The Kochi Water Metro Service, launched by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, is set to witness significant growth as plans are underway to expand the service. The authorities have made the decision to construct 20 additional terminals by connecting various waterways in the region. Out of these, land acquisition has already been completed for 16 terminals, and the tender process for their construction is in its final stage.
The expansion of the water metro service aims to benefit several areas, including Nettoor, Thaikkudam, Thoppumpady, Mattancherry, Thanthonni Thuruthu, Varappuzha, and Kadamakkudy. The introduction of the service to these new terminals will effectively address traffic issues experienced by 10 islands in the area.
To facilitate the increased demand, the project includes a fleet of 23 large boats and 55 small boats, all of which are being manufactured by the Cochin Shipyard. This strategic move ensures that the water metro service is well-equipped to meet the growing transportation needs of the region.
Progress is also being made on the construction of new terminals at Bolgatti, South Chittoor, Eloor, and Cheranalloor. These terminals, which were initiated earlier, are now in the final stages of completion. Once the tender process for the newly planned terminals is finalized, construction for those terminals will commence shortly.
With the expansion of the Kochi Water Metro Service and the addition of more terminals, the region can look forward to enhanced connectivity, reduced traffic congestion, and improved access to various islands. This development signifies a significant step towards the transformation of water transport in Kochi, benefitting both residents and tourists alike.
