New Delhi: On Tuesday, the Delhi police detained workers from the Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP) for staging a protest outside the residence of Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal. The ABVP workers were protesting against the alleged mismanagement of coaching institutes in the city.

The protest followed a recent incident on June 15, where a fire broke out in a coaching centre building in Delhi’s Mukherjee Nagar. An official statement mentioned that 61 individuals were admitted to three hospitals due to the incident. The statement revealed that approximately 200–250 students from different coaching centres were present in the building at the time of the fire.

Taking note of a newspaper report and WhatsApp messages circulating on social media, the Delhi High Court, on June 16, took suo moto cognizance of the Mukherjee Nagar fire incident. A vacation bench consisting of justices Jasmeet Singh and Vikas Mahajan issued notices to the Delhi Government, Delhi Fire Services, Delhi Police, and the Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD), seeking their response within two weeks. The court instructed the concerned authorities to file their responses within the given timeframe and scheduled the matter before the bench of the Chief Justice on July 3, stating, “List this matter before a bench comprising the hon’ble chief justice for the appropriate order or direction on July 3.”
