Manchester: Manchester United has made some significant decisions regarding player releases after the conclusion of the 2022-23 season, with a few surprises in store for fans.

One of the most crucial decisions for the club revolves around the contract extension of David De Gea, their longest-serving goalkeeper. Although De Gea’s contract is set to expire, the discussions between the club and the Spanish shot-stopper are ongoing, as confirmed by an official statement on Manchester United’s website.

If an agreement cannot be reached, De Gea may leave on a free transfer, bringing an end to his remarkable 13-year tenure with the Red Devils. De Gea has accumulated nearly 550 appearances for the club and was awarded the golden glove last season for keeping 17 clean sheets. The upcoming week will determine the future of the highly regarded goalkeeper.

Marcel Sabitzer, who arrived on a short-term loan spell from Bayern Munich, impressed under the management of Erik Ten Hag. Sabitzer showcased his abilities by scoring twice in the Europa League clash against Sevilla and also netted in the Emirates FA Cup comeback against Fulham. Unfortunately, a knee problem hindered his availability for the remainder of the season.

Despite his contributions, Manchester United has decided against signing the Austrian midfielder permanently. Additionally, Wout Weghorst, who made significant contributions to United’s Carabao Cup success and securing a top-three spot in the Premier League, is set to return to Burnley after his loan spell.

Several players who were sent out on loan have also completed their loan spells. Eric Bailly has finished his loan spell at Marseille, Alvaro Fernandez at Preston North End, and Alex Telles at Sevilla. On the other hand, Di’Shon Bernard and Axel Tuanzebe have been released by Manchester United, allowing them to pursue opportunities with new clubs.

In other transfer news, Jack Butland has been confirmed as a new player for Rangers following his switch from Crystal Palace. The English goalkeeper will embark on a new chapter in his career with the Scottish club.
