New Delhi: The prestigious Commonwealth Weightlifting Championships 2023 are set to take place in India from July 12 to 16. The Gautam Buddha University in Greater Noida, Uttar Pradesh, has been chosen as the venue for the highly anticipated event.

Host nation India will be represented by a strong 20-member contingent, as announced by the Indian Weightlifting Federation on Thursday. The squad includes notable athletes such as Jhilli Dalabehera, the 2019 champion, Commonwealth Games 2022 bronze medalist Lovepreet Singh, and 2021 champion Purnima Pandey. Popy Hazarika and Harjinder Kaur, who won silver medals at the Commonwealth Championships 2021 in Tashkent, Uzbekistan, will also be part of the Indian team. However, Tokyo Olympic silver medalist Mirabai Chanu and Commonwealth Games champions Jeremy Lalrinnunga and Achinta Sheuli have decided not to participate.

The Commonwealth Weightlifting Championship 2023 will see more than 250 weightlifters from 20 countries competing for medals across various weight categories. In addition to the senior championship, junior and youth weightlifting events will also be held simultaneously, providing an opportunity for budding talents to showcase their skills.

This will be the second time India has hosted the Commonwealth Weightlifting Championships since their inception in 1980. The previous edition was successfully held in Pune in 2015, further enhancing India’s reputation as a capable host for international sporting events.

India’s performance at the last edition of the Commonwealth Weightlifting Championships in 2021 was remarkable, as they secured a total of 16 medals in Tashkent, Uzbekistan. This tally was the highest among all participating countries. However, Canada emerged as the overall leader in the medal tally, claiming five gold medals compared to India’s four.

Following the Commonwealth Weightlifting Championships, the Asian Junior and Youth Weightlifting Championship 2023 will also be hosted at Gautam Buddha University in Greater Noida. Scheduled from July 28 to August 5, this will mark the first time that India hosts the junior and youth-level Asian weightlifting championship, further bolstering the country’s status as a prominent destination for weightlifting events.

The following athletes, including men and women, will participate in Commonwealth Weightlifting Championship 2023
