New Delhi :Sunil Gavaskar, one of India’s most revered cricket figures, has voiced his disappointment in Rohit Sharma’s tenure as the Indian cricket team captain. Gavaskar, known for his no-nonsense approach, has called for increased accountability from both Sharma and the coaching staff.

While India has enjoyed success in bilateral home series under Sharma’s leadership, the team’s performance in overseas matches has been a cause for concern. The disappointment was particularly evident during the T20 World Cup in Australia, where India failed to qualify for the final. Additionally, the team’s loss in the World Test Championship final last month further highlighted the need for introspection and improvement.

“I expected more from him (Rohit). In India, it is different, but when you do well overseas, that is really the test. That is where he has been a little disappointing,” Gavaskar stated in an interview with The Indian Express. Gavaskar’s high expectations stem from Sharma’s extensive experience as a captain in the Indian Premier League (IPL) and his ability to perform consistently at the international level.

Gavaskar went on to emphasise the importance of accountability within the team, particularly in relation to the coaching staff. He specifically addressed the team’s defeat to Australia in the World Test Championship final, suggesting that both Coach Rahul Dravid and Captain Rohit Sharma should have been held accountable for the decisions made during the match.

“They should be asking questions like, ‘Why did you field first?’ Okay, it was explained at the toss that it was overcast and all. The question after that should be, ‘You didn’t know about Travis Head’s weakness against the short ball?’ Why was the bouncer employed only when he had scored 80 runs?” Gavaskar stated. He stressed the importance of recognising and capitalising on the opposition’s weaknesses, citing expert commentary that had highlighted Head’s vulnerability to short-pitched deliveries.

Gavaskar further called for a thorough review of India’s losses and urged the team management to analyse the decision-making process in crucial matches. Holding individuals accountable and learning from mistakes, according to Gavaskar, is essential for the team’s growth and future success.
