Bangkok, Thailand : The Indian athletics team is all set to make its mark at the Asian Athletics Championships 2023, which will be held at the Suphachalasai National Stadium from July 12 to 16. Spearheaded by shot put record holder Tajinderpal Singh Toor and ace hurdler Jyothi Yarraji, the Indian contingent is eager to showcase their talents and bring glory to the nation.
The Asian Athletics Championships are making a comeback after a four-year hiatus caused by the COVID-19 pandemic. The 2021 edition, scheduled to take place in Hangzhou, China, was unfortunately cancelled. However, the athletes are now determined to make up for the lost time and compete at their best in Thailand.
The Indian team initially announced a 54-member squad for the championships, but a few athletes had to withdraw due to injuries. Notable absences include Olympic champion Neeraj Chopra and steeplechase athlete Avinash Sable, who are focusing on the upcoming World Athletics Championships in August.
Tajinderpal Singh Toor, the reigning Asian Games champion in shot put, will lead India’s charge in the field events. The 28-year-old recently set new Asian and national records with a remarkable throw of 21.77 metres at the National Inter-State Championships. Alongside Toor, Murali Sreeshankar, who achieved a personal best jump of 8.41m, will compete in the men’s long jump event. Shaili Singh and Ancy Sojan will represent India in the women’s long jump.
Jyothi Yarraji, the national record holder in the women’s 100-metre hurdles, will be a strong contender in the track events. Yarraji has had an impressive season, winning medals in various international and domestic competitions. Rezoana Mallick Heena, the reigning Asian U20 women’s 400m champion, will also be part of the Indian squad, adding depth to the team’s lineup.
The Indian team underwent extensive training camps in Patiala, Bengaluru, and Thiruvananthapuram to fine-tune their skills and prepare for the championships. Anju Bobby George, an Olympian and World Championships bronze medalist in long jump, has been appointed as the team leader of the Indian contingent, lending her expertise and guidance to the athletes.
In the previous edition of the Asian Athletics Championships held in Doha in 2019, India achieved great success, winning a total of 15 medals, including two golds, eight silvers, and five bronzes. The Indian athletes are determined to surpass their previous performances and make their country proud once again.
Fans across India can catch the action of the Asian Athletics Championships 2023 through live streaming. The event promises to be a platform for athletes to showcase their talents and compete against the best in Asia. With the support of the nation behind them, the Indian team is ready to leave their mark on the continental stage.
As the athletes gear up for the competition, all eyes will be on Tajinderpal Singh Toor, Jyothi Yarraji, and their teammates as they strive to bring home medals and create memorable moments at the Asian Athletics Championships 2023.
