ERNAKULAM: The health department has initiated an investigation into a distressing incident where a patient allegedly passed away due to a delayed ambulance response. The complaint centers around the conduct of an ambulance driver employed at Ernakulam Paravoor Taluk Hospital.

According to the allegations made by the patient’s relatives, the ambulance driver demanded upfront payment before agreeing to transport the patient to the hospital. This incident pertains to the unfortunate demise of Asma, a Paravoor resident.

The investigation was prompted by concerns raised about the patient’s prolonged wait for transportation to Ernakulam General Hospital, where specialized treatment was available, after initially receiving treatment for a fever at Paravoor Taluk Hospital.

To address the situation, Health Minister Veena George has instructed the Secretary of the Health Department to conduct a thorough investigation and take appropriate action. The primary focus is on examining the driver’s conduct and ensuring accountability.

It has been reported that the driver insisted on receiving a payment of 900 rupees in advance for the ambulance service. However, the patient’s relatives only had 700 rupees at the time. Despite assuring the driver that the remaining amount would be provided promptly, they claim that he refused to transport the patient.

Eventually, the patient was taken to the General Hospital, but unfortunately, she passed away within half an hour. The incident occurred recently, and the patient’s relatives promptly filed a complaint against the ambulance driver with the Superintendent of Paravur Taluk Hospital.

Contrary to the allegations, the ambulance driver named Anthony has denied insisting on advance payment before providing transportation services. The investigation will aim to gather all pertinent information and ascertain the truth of the matter.
