Indian Weightlifters shine on opening day of Commonwealth Weightlifting Championships

Greater Noida – The senior Commonwealth Weightlifting Championships 2023 kicked off with a remarkable performance by Indian weightlifters, who secured three gold and two silver medals on the opening day at Gautam Buddha University. Komal Kohar and Gyaneshwari Yadav claimed gold medals in the women’s 45kg and women’s 49kg categories, respectively, while Mukund Aher emerged victorious in the men’s 55kg category. Jhilli Dalabehera and Shrabani Das settled for silver medals in their respective events.

Komal Kohar set the tone for India’s success by lifting a total of 154kg (68kg snatch plus 86kg clean and jerk) in the women’s 45kg category. Sri Lanka’s Srimali Samarakoon Divisekara secured the silver medal with a total lift of 146kg (61kg snatch + 85kg clean and jerk), while Malta’s Kim Camilleri Lagana took the bronze with 134kg (58kg snatch + 76kg clean and jerk). It is worth noting that only three weightlifters competed in the women’s 45 kg senior category.

In the women’s 49kg category, Gyaneshwari Yadav, who previously won silver at the Junior World Weightlifting Championships, dominated the field by registering a total of 176kg (78kg snatch + 98kg clean and jerk) to claim the gold medal. Jhilli Dalabehera, the 2019 Commonwealth champion, settled for silver with a combined lift of 169kg (75kg snatch + 94kg clean and jerk), while Canada’s Alina Ismaguilova won the bronze with an effort of 160kg (68kg snatch + 92kg clean and jerk) in a seven-member field.

In the men’s 55kg category, Mukund Aher delivered a stellar performance, winning the gold medal in both the senior and junior categories. He lifted a total of 239kg (106kg snatch + 133kg clean and jerk) to clinch the top spot. Md. Ashikur Rahman Taj of Bangladesh secured the silver medal with a total lift of 207kg (92kg snatch plus 105kg clean and jerk). Notably, only two men competed in the senior category.

Shrabani Das added to India’s medal tally by winning the silver medal in the women’s 55kg category. She achieved a total lift of 181kg (81kg snatch + 100kg clean and jerk), finishing behind Jenly Tegu Wini of the Solomon Islands, who secured her third gold medal at the Commonwealth Championships with an effort of 189kg (83kg snatch + 106kg clean and jerk). The senior women’s 55kg event featured a total of nine weightlifters. Chloe Parkins of Australia won the bronze by hoisting 152kg (66kg snatch plus 86kg clean and jerk).
The Commonwealth Weightlifting Championships 2023 feature over 250 weightlifters from 20 countries competing across junior, youth, and senior events. The highly anticipated competition will conclude on July 16, promising more exciting feats of strength and skill from the talented athletes.
