New Delhi: In a major relief for consumers, the Centre has taken action to combat the soaring tomato prices that had burdened households across the country. As of today, the wholesale price of tomatoes has been reduced from Rs 90 to Rs 80 per kg.
An official release stated that the decision to revise the tomato prices came after a thorough evaluation of the current market situation. The price changes will be implemented starting from today, July 16, in key cities including Delhi, Noida, Lucknow, Kanpur, Varanasi, Patna, Muzaffarpur, and Arrah. This initiative is being carried out through the coordinated efforts of the National Agriculture Cooperation Marketing Federation of India (NAFED) and the National Consumer Cooperation Federation (NCCF).
Depending on the market price in the current locations, the reduction in tomato prices may be extended to more cities in the future. Notably, the previous rate for tomatoes, which stood at Rs 90 per kg, was adjusted on July 14.
Chairman of NCCF, Vishal Singh, confirmed that fresh consignments of tomatoes have arrived from Andhra Pradesh, Karnataka, and Maharashtra, which should help stabilise the market.
The recent surge in tomato prices has caused significant distress for consumers nationwide. In several major cities, tomato prices had skyrocketed, reaching an unprecedented range of Rs. 150–160 per kg. The impact of the rising tomato and vegetable prices was also evident in the retail inflation data for the month of June.
