Bangkok: Indian athletes displayed exceptional performances at the Asian Athletics Championships 2023, held at the Suphachalasai National Stadium in Bangkok, Thailand. They clinched a total of 27 medals, including six gold, 12 silver, and nine bronze, to equal their best-ever showing in terms of medal count at the prestigious event.

The Asian Athletics Championships marked a triumphant return for Indian athletes after a four-year hiatus caused by the cancellation of the 2021 edition in Hangzhou, China, due to the COVID-19 pandemic. The previous edition in Doha, Qatar, in 2019 saw India secure 16 medals, including two golds, seven silvers, and seven bronzes.

Tajinderpal Singh Toor led the charge for India by winning the gold medal in the men’s shot put event. Toor’s powerful throws impressed both the fans and the judges, securing him a well-deserved victory. Jyothi Yarraji showcased her skills in the women’s hurdles, clinching gold for India. Abdullah Aboobacker triumphed in the triple jump event, displaying incredible athleticism and precision.

Parul Chaudhary’s exceptional performance in the women’s steeplechase earned her a gold medal, while Ajay Kumar Saroj dominated the men’s 1500m race to claim India’s fifth gold. The Indian contingent’s success continued with the mixed 4x400m relay team composed of Rajesh Ramesh, Aishwarya Kailash Mishra, Amoj Jacob, and Subha Venkatesan, who secured the sixth gold medal for India.

India’s achievement at the Asian Athletics Championships 2023 saw them finish in third place in the overall medal table. The nation’s medal tally was matched by their outstanding performance at the 2017 championships in Bhubaneswar, where they also claimed 27 medals, including nine golds.

Japan emerged as the overall champions, capturing a staggering 37 medals, including 16 golds. The People’s Republic of China secured the second position with 22 medals, including eight golds. The competition was fierce, showcasing the remarkable talent and determination of athletes from across Asia.
