State government not taking pro-active steps in eradicating mosquitoes; infectious diseases spread in Kerala

Thiruvananthapuram: Kerala government is not efficiently conducting mosquito eradication activities even when the state is witnessing rising infectious diseases. The government has not allotted funds to districts to conduct mosquito eradication and prevention activities. This has become a big hurdle for the local governments to control the breeding of mosquitoes.

The number of people affected by diseases caused by mosquito bites in the state has increased. Even though the health department claims that the preventive measures have strengthened, there is no decrease in the number of patients. Daily more than 200 people seek medical treatment with symptoms of dengue fever. Though the government has ordered to observe Friday, Saturday and Sunday as dry days, the activities are not efficient.

One of the main reasons for the increase in number of patients is the failure of the government on conducting cleaning and fogging before the onset of rainy season.

The health department had asked the district administrations to conduct preventive measures centered on panchayats. It was said that eradication of mosquitoes and awareness would be part of these preventive measures.
