Thimphu, Bhutan: Bhutan is gearing up to make its mark at the 19th Asian Games, with its highest-ever contingent of 28 athletes set to participate in the prestigious sporting event, scheduled to take place in Hangzhou, China, from September 23 to October 8. According to a report , Bhutan has participated in the Asian Games since the South Korean Games in 1986, but has not yet been awarded a medal.
The Bhutanese athletes will showcase their prowess in karate, boxing, taekwondo, golf, archery, shooting, swimming, athletics, judo, and badminton events. For the first time, Bhutanese athletes will be making their debut appearances in judo, swimming, karate, and badminton competitions at the Asian Games.
The selection of the 28 athletes reflects the nation’s commitment to strengthening its sporting representation on the international stage. With preparations in full swing, the athletes are leaving no stone unturned in their quest for glory. To ensure they are well prepared, ten coaches will accompany the contingent, providing essential guidance and support.
In a significant development, some of the Bhutanese athletes have been training in sports complexes abroad to hone their skills and gain valuable exposure. Bhutanese swimmers and badminton players are currently undergoing rigorous training in Thailand, while four taekwondo players are receiving specialised training at Kyung-II University in South Korea.
