Gandhinagar: The American multinational semiconductor company Advanced Micro Devices (AMD) has announced its plans to invest approximately $400 million in India over the next five years. The announcement was made during the ongoing ‘Semicon India Conference 2023’ in Gandhinagar, Gujarat, in the presence of Prime Minister Narendra Modi. AMD will establish its largest design and R&D centre in Bengaluru as part of this investment and is expected to create around 3,000 new engineering roles in India by 2028.
The new Bengaluru campus, spanning 500,000 square feet, is set to open before the end of 2023. It will be equipped with cutting-edge collaboration tools and lab spaces to promote teamwork. The investment will expand AMD’s presence in India, adding to its current office locations in Bengaluru, Delhi, Gurugram, Hyderabad, and Mumbai. AMD initiated its operations in India in 2001, and it now employs approximately 6,500 people in the country.
AMD’s Chief Technology Officer, Mark Papermaster, emphasised the company’s commitment to driving innovation in India, particularly in support of the India Semiconductor Mission. Prime Minister Narendra Modi addressed the conference and invited global semiconductor companies to invest in India, highlighting the country’s growing prominence as a trusted partner in the global chip supply chain. He urged investors to develop a chip-making ecosystem in India, offering a “first mover’s advantage” to those who step forward.
The theme of the ‘Semicon India Conference 2023’ is ‘Catalysing India’s Semiconductor Ecosystem,’ with a focus on making India a global hub for semiconductor design, manufacturing, and technology development. The conference saw participation from prominent industry leaders, academia, and research institutions, showcasing India’s semiconductor strategy and policy.
Prime Minister Modi highlighted India’s tech-friendly environment and the nation’s rapid adoption of technology, driven by aspirations and supported by factors such as affordable data availability, quality digital infrastructure, and uninterrupted power supply. The world’s trust in India is on the rise, attributed to a stable, reform-oriented government and India’s emerging position as a reliable partner in the chip supply chain. Furthermore, he emphasised that India’s ambitious aspirations are a key driving force behind the country’s growth.
The ‘Semicon India Conference 2023’ saw representatives from major companies such as Micron Technology, Applied Materials, Foxconn, SEMI, and AMD, among others. The conference aimed to foster collaboration and further India’s growth in the semiconductor industry.
