New Delhi : Indian women’s senior national team head coach Thomas Dennerby expressed his confidence in the development of women’s football in India and believes that a strong defensive approach can lead to victories against formidable opponents like Japan and Uzbekistan. Dennerby is back in India after a three-month gap to lead the Blue Tigresses in the upcoming 19th Asian Games and AFC Women’s Olympic Qualifiers Round 2, scheduled for September and October, respectively.

In preparation for the 19th Asian Games, India’s women’s team has been placed in Group B alongside Chinese Taipei and Thailand. Following this, the Blue Tigresses will face their next challenge in Uzbekistan, competing against hosts Uzbekistan, Japan, and Vietnam in the AFC Women’s Olympic Qualifiers Round 2.

Discussing the upcoming challenges, Coach Dennerby acknowledged the formidable competition in their group, especially Japan, who have already displayed their prowess with two World Cup wins without conceding a goal. Despite being aware of the tough battles ahead, Dennerby emphasised the importance of a strong defensive strategy coupled with their ability to create goal-scoring opportunities. He firmly believes that with the right approach and effort, India stands a chance against these top-tier teams.

Reflecting on the successful Round 2 of the 2024 AFC Women’s Olympic Qualifying Tournament held in the Kyrgyz Republic, Dennerby expressed pride in the team’s performances and achievements. Looking ahead, he stressed the significance of converting chances in the offensive box, an area where the team has shown promise but seeks to capitalise more effectively. Additionally, Dennerby emphasised the need to maintain a disciplined and solid defence, which has been a key factor in their recent successes.

Acknowledging the challenges faced in friendly games, Dennerby highlighted the importance of rectifying defensive lapses and ensuring a consistently strong performance at the back. He expressed optimism in India’s potential to progress through the qualification rounds if the team maintains a high level of discipline, sharpness in finishing, and a steadfast defensive approach.

As the National Camp for the Indian women’s senior team, consisting of 38 probables, commences in Bhubaneswar on July 30, the players and coaching staff are gearing up to prepare mentally, physically, technically, and tactically for the upcoming challenges. With Thomas Dennerby at the helm, India’s women’s football team aims to rise to new heights and make a mark on the international stage. As the team sets its sights on the 19th Asian Games and AFC Women’s Olympic Qualifiers Round 2, Indian football enthusiasts eagerly await the Blue Tigresses’ performances, hoping for a triumphant journey in the pursuit of glory.
