Manchester: In a thrilling finale at The Oval, England’s veteran fast bowler Stuart Broad conjured one last burst of magic, securing a remarkable comeback from two-nil down and squaring the Ashes series two-all against arch-rivals Australia. Broad’s brilliance on the fifth day helped England secure a dramatic 49-run victory, sealing a historic draw in the prestigious cricket contest.

With the urn already retained by Australia due to a rain-marred match in Manchester, England was determined to capitalize on the opportunity to level the series at The Oval. Setting a challenging target of 384 runs for the visitors to win, England’s batting lineup had done their part, scoring 283 and 395 in the first and second innings, respectively.

On the final day, as Australia mounted a spirited chase, it seemed like they might just pull off an incredible victory. The dynamic duo of Steven Smith and Travis Head showed great resilience, propelling Australia to a promising position. However, the momentum shifted drastically after the tea break when England’s bowlers mounted an astonishing collapse, reducing Australia from a seemingly comfortable position to a nail-biting defeat.

Moeen Ali, despite a groine strain and in what was likely to be his final Test match, showcased his class by taking a crucial wicket, dismissing Travis Head. Then, Chris Woakes found the edge of Steven Smith’s bat, giving England a much-needed breakthrough. The experienced Mitchell Marsh fell shortly after, followed by the dismissal of Mitchell Starc, triggering an explosion of joy in the crowd at The Oval.

With the game hanging in the balance and only 90 runs left to chase, Australia’s hopes rested on the shoulders of Todd Murphy and Alex Carey. However, it was Broad who stole the show and etched his name in cricketing history. With impeccable precision, Broad accounted for both Murphy and Carey, leading England to a hard-fought victory.

For Stuart Broad, it was a fitting farewell to an illustrious international career. His last two wickets took his Test tally to a staggering 604, making him England’s all-time leading Ashes wicket-taker. As Broad celebrated, the crowd erupted in appreciation for the veteran bowler’s contributions to the sport. As he announces his retirement from Test cricket in international cricket, Indian cricketing icon Sachin Tendulkar praises Stuart Broad’s “phenomenal career.

England’s pace bowlers had struggled on the previous day, but the replacement ball and favourable overhead conditions on the final morning gave them an edge. Chris Woakes, who proved to be David Warner’s nemesis throughout the series, took a crucial wicket, while Mark Wood accounted for the dangerous Marnus Labuschagne.

The match was not without its share of drama, as Steven Smith was controversially reprieved before lunch. However, England’s never-say-die attitude and spirited bowling performance ensured that they claimed victory in the face of adversity.

As the final ball was bowled and the series ended in a pulsating draw, both teams left the field with their heads held high. Australia, though unable to clinch an overseas Ashes series win since 2001, had shown great fight throughout. On the other hand, England’s remarkable transformation in Test cricket was validated by this spirited performance, having struggled during their previous Ashes tour.
