Port Moresby: In a show of camaraderie, Indian Naval teams engaged in a yoga session today at the Port Moresby harbour in Papua New Guinea, alongside local residents. The Indian High Commission in Port Moresby reported that the Yoga event brought together Indian sailors, led by Captain Rajan Kapoor from Indian Naval Ship (INS) Sahyadri, and members of Papua New Guinea’s Active City Development Program.

INS Sahyadri, a Frigate-class vessel, and INS Kolkata, a Destroyer-class vessel, are currently on a goodwill visit to Papua New Guinea. The ships will be stationed at Port Moresby from August 2 to August 4. On August 3, the members of the Indian community in Papua New Guinea will have the opportunity to visit INS Kolkata.

The statement released by the High Commission of India in Port Moresby highlighted that INS Sahyadri had previously visited Port Moresby from June 12 to June 15, 2017, during a goodwill visit commanded by Captain Anil Jaggi, accompanied by over 200 crew members.

India and Papua New Guinea share a close and friendly relationship, with diplomatic ties formalised since May 19, 1976. India established its High Commission in Port Moresby in April 1996. Notably, in May of this year, Prime Minister Narendra Modi undertook a visit to Papua New Guinea. During the visit, he chaired the 3rd Summit of the Forum for India-Pacific Islands Cooperation (FIPIC) and engaged in productive discussions with his counterpart, James Marape.

Their talks encompassed cooperation across various sectors such as commerce, technology, healthcare, and collaborative efforts to address climate change. Prime Minister Modi also held discussions with Papua New Guinea’s Governor-General, Bob Dadae. The visit further solidified the bilateral ties between the two nations.
