New Delhi: Researchers at IIT Delhi have pioneered a groundbreaking bullet-proof jacket for soldiers that stands apart from conventional models used globally. This innovative jacket boasts a remarkable capability to withstand the impact of six sniper shots simultaneously, a significant leap beyond the prevailing standard. Traditional bullet-proof jackets utilised by military forces worldwide can endure up to three shots, including those employed by prominent entities like the US Army and the Chinese military.

During rigorous testing, this new bullet-proof jacket demonstrated its exceptional resilience by remaining impervious even after being subjected to a barrage of eight bullets. Notably, this advanced protective gear is also lighter by two and a half kgs compared to existing jackets in use internationally. The mastermind behind this revolutionary design is Professor Naresh Bhatnagar from IIT Delhi, who dedicated fifteen years to its development.

Originally conceived to meet BS-5 norms, the jacket ultimately surpassed expectations by satisfying the more stringent BS-6 standards as well. Professor Naresh Bhatnagar revealed that the army had set a specific target of withstanding six sniper bullets, a challenge that their innovation triumphantly met.

With the technology now fully realised, the manufacturing phase is poised to commence, with plans to make this cutting-edge jacket available to soldiers within the next year and a half. This remarkable achievement not only enhances the safety of soldiers on the field but also exemplifies the potential for scientific innovation to revolutionise essential aspects of security and defence.
