A historic leap in space exploration is on the horizon as Nora Al Matrooshi prepares to etch her name in the history as the UAE’s first woman astronaut. As her training intensifies, Al Matrooshi’s journey embodies the nation’s aspirations for excellence in space exploration.

The groundwork for this momentous milestone is being laid through rigorous training at NASA, which has already commenced Al Matrooshi’s spacewalk preparations. Her training unfolds within the confines of the Neutral Buoyancy Laboratory in Texas, an indoor pool filled with an astounding 2.3 million litres of water.

The immersive training places Al Matrooshi in a 145-kg spacesuit, emulating the conditions she will face during her spacewalks. In collaboration with fellow astronaut Muhammad al-Mualla and under the guidance of the UAE’s first astronaut, Hassan Mansoori, the training delves deep into the nuances of space exploration.

The training for spacewalks involves a seven- eight hour practise session in a neutral buoyancy laboratory pool, which is designed to simulate a weightless environment. This preparation mirrors the conditions experienced by astronauts during extended periods outside the spacecraft for maintenance tasks, lasting between seven and eight hours. This training is an integral component of their overall preparation.
