Indian Sprinter Dutee Chand urged the central govt help after receiving four-year ban from NADA

New Delhi: Dutee Chand, India’s fastest woman athlete and a renowned Asian Games silver medalist, finds herself in the midst of a doping controversy as the National Anti-Doping Agency (NADA) has imposed a four-year ban on her. This stern action comes in the wake of Chand’s provisional suspension earlier this year, following the discovery of “anabolic agents/SARMS” in her urine samples, substances that feature on the “WADA’s 2023 prohibited list of non-specified substances.”

Chand’s suspension officially commenced on January 3, 2023, and casts a shadow over her recent athletic achievements. Furthermore, the NADA’s ruling dictates that all her competition results from December 5, 2022, onwards will be invalidated, effectively wiping out her performances during this period.

In response to the ban, Dutee Chand has appealed to both the Odisha state government and the central government for assistance, with the hope of being able to represent India in various international competitions. While she faces a significant obstacle in her athletic career, Chand’s determination to continue competing at the highest level remains undeterred.

Dutee Chand is no stranger to the podium, having clinched silver medals in the 100m and 200m women’s events at the 2018 Asian Games. Her consistent excellence has also resulted in bronze medals at the Asian Champions in 2013, 2017, and 2019. In 2019, she etched her name in the annals of Indian sports history by becoming the first Indian woman sprinter to secure gold at a Universiade, triumphing in the fiercely contested 100-metre event.
