Bengaluru: ISRO has declared that all necessary preparations have been successfully concluded for the impending soft landing operation. As planned, the lander module is poised to touch down at 5:44 pm. The dedicated operation team is fully prepared to oversee the lander’s intricate manoeuvres, as conveyed by ISRO through their official communication.
The anticipated time frame for a secure landing is within 6:04 pm today, with the preparatory procedures set to commence at 5:30 pm. This multi-phase landing procedure encompasses rough braking, attitude control, precise braking, and terminal descent, ultimately leading to the final touchdown.
Upon completing these critical phases, the lander is slated to hover a mere 10 metres above the lunar surface. At this juncture, the thruster engines will cease operation, enabling the lander’s gentle descent. The velocity at this stage should not exceed two metres per second. The final 20 minutes of this mission are pivotal, marking the culminating moments of Chandrayaan-3’s triumphant journey.

In a prior update pertaining to the Chandrayaan-3 lander’s soft landing, ISRO affirmed the mission’s on-track progress and regular system assessments. Alongside this, ISRO also unveiled a series of close-up lunar images. These images will play a vital role in aiding the lander module’s positional determination (latitude and longitude) by correlating them with an onboard moon reference map.
Should this mission achieve success, India will carve a significant milestone by becoming the solitary country to establish a presence on the challenging lunar South Pole. This feat is notable due to the region’s rugged and inhospitable conditions. Furthermore, India would become the fourth country, following in the footsteps of the US, China, and Russia, to successfully execute a lunar surface landing.
