State power crisis: Chief Minister and Electricity Minister’s meeting scheduled Today

Thiruvanathapuram: In a bid to address the prevailing power crisis in the state, Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan and Electricity Minister K Krishnankutty are set to convene a significant meeting today. While the government’s stance is against enforcing load shedding, the Power Minister will brief the Chief Minister about the current electricity situation. Notably, the State Regulatory Commission has granted the Kerala State Electricity Board (KSEB) the authorization to procure external electricity until December.

Simultaneously, sources indicate that an additional surcharge of 19 paise per unit for electricity will be levied next month. This charge encompasses the 10 paise determined by KSEB and a further nine paise stipulated by the Regulatory Commission, effective until November. Against the backdrop of the ongoing electricity shortfall within the state, today’s discussion between the Power Minister and the Chief Minister will encompass subjects such as tariff adjustments. Hopes are pinned on discovering a resolution to the state’s electricity predicament, even amidst reduced production capacity.

Minister K. Krishnankutty had previously remarked that, given the deepening power crisis, stringent electrical usage control becomes imperative, potentially leading to tariff hikes. At present, the Electricity Department’s strategy is to align charges with the prevailing electricity purchase rates.E
