Indore, Madhya Pradesh: Indore, a beacon of urban transformation in India, has been lauded for its remarkable strides in improving living conditions by bolstering infrastructure. Recognising its exceptional efforts, the Union Ministry of Housing and Finance has bestowed the prestigious Smart Cities Mission Award 2022 upon Madhya Pradesh, with Indore securing the title of the best city and the state as the best overall performer. This accolade underscores the city’s commitment to sustainable development and elevating the quality of life for its residents.

Outshining its contemporaries, Indore has emerged as a testament to diligent urban planning and execution, positioning itself as a prime example of effective governance in driving change. The accolade acknowledges the successful realisation of a plethora of projects aimed at sustainable development, accomplished within stipulated time frames—a key criterion for evaluation.

The award, scheduled to be presented by the President on September 27, is a testament to the city’s dedication to creating a better living environment for its inhabitants. A pivotal aspect of this recognition is Indore’s consistent excellence in cleanliness. Securing the title of the cleanest city in the nation for the past six consecutive years, Indore’s conscientious waste management practices have significantly contributed to its resounding success.

Madhya Pradesh, the state that houses Indore, clinched the cleanest state title in the Swachh Survey 2022, further underscoring the state’s commitment to maintaining high sanitation standards across its cities and towns.

At the heart of Indore’s success are its innovative waste management initiatives. In a city with a population of 35 lakh, a staggering 1,900 metric tonnes of waste are generated daily. Divided into dry and wet waste, these materials are meticulously sorted into six categories and transported to waste treatment plants. An integral feature of Indore’s waste management landscape is its bio-CNG plant, fueled by the city’s wet waste. This forward-thinking endeavour has resulted in the production of 17,000 to 18,000 kg of bio-CNG and 10 tonnes of bio-fertiliser, with approximately 150 city buses operating on bio-CNG. The revenue generated from effective waste management, amounting to Rs 14.45 crore in the last financial year, further underscores the city’s commitment to cleanliness.

The Smart City Mission (SCM) project, initiated by the Central Government in 2015, aimed to leverage advanced technology to enhance urban infrastructure. As a testament to its success, 6,041 projects valued at Rs 110,635 crore have been successfully completed, with 1,894 projects amounting to Rs 60,095 crore earmarked for completion by June 30, 2024.
