Huge setback to Australia’s World Cup dreams: Star batsman injured, may miss World Cup

Durban: Australia’s star all-rounder Glenn Maxwell finds himself in a challenging race against time as he grapples with a fresh injury, just a month away from the ICC ODI World Cup. Maxwell sustained an ankle injury during a training session in Durban, where he was preparing for Australia’s T20I series against South Africa. His departure from the training camp has been prompted by his impending fatherhood, as he returns home to be by his wife’s side during the birth of their first child, as confirmed by the ICC.

While Maxwell is anticipated to make a complete recovery from his ankle injury, national selector Tony Dodemaide has emphasised the cautious approach that will be taken given the player’s history of injuries. At 34 years old, Maxwell’s fitness remains a priority, especially considering his previous freak leg injury sustained at a friend’s gathering last year.

Despite these challenges, Dodemaide remains optimistic about Maxwell’s readiness for Australia’s upcoming ODI series against India, scheduled for the following month. The selectors and team management are committed to ensuring Maxwell’s well-being and full recovery before he takes the field again.

Maxwell’s recent injury has created an opportunity for the return of Matthew Wade, who has earned a recall to the T20I squad for the series against South Africa. Wade’s inclusion not only bolsters the team’s options but also brings another wicketkeeper alternative alongside Josh Inglis.

Maxwell is not the only absence from Australia’s T20I squad; a string of notable players, including Steve Smith, Mitchell Starc, Pat Cummins, Josh Hazlewood, Cameron Green, and David Warner, are currently sidelined as well. This presents an interesting dynamic for the team as they prepare for the upcoming challenges.

Australia’s T20 squad to face South Africa comprises a mix of experienced and emerging talents, under the leadership of Mitchell Marsh. The squad includes Mitchell Marsh (c), Sean Abbott, Tim David, Ben Dwarshuis, Nathan Ellis, Aaron Hardie, Travis Head, Josh Inglis, Spencer Johnson, Matt Short, Marcus Stoinis, Ashton Turner, Matthew Wade, and Adam Zampa.
