Upendra Sawant joins Eknath Shinde faction; heavy blow to Uddhav Thackeray and Sanjay Raut

Mumbai: A prominent figure in Maharashtra politics, Upendra Sawant, has made a significant shift by aligning with the Shinde party. This move carries substantial implications, posing a notable setback for the Uddhav-led faction. Sawant, formerly a corporator from the Vikhroli Kannamwar Nagar region, held close ties with Sanjay Raut and his brother Sunil Raut. Chief Minister Eknath Shinde extended a warm welcome to Upendra Sawant and his associates as they joined the party’s ranks.

The inclusion of Sawant into the Shiv Sena follows the recent entrance of seven former Congress corporators from Dharavi into the party fold. This sequence of developments presents a considerable challenge as the party gears up for the upcoming third phase of the I.N.D.I.A meeting, scheduled for September 1 in Mumbai. In a prior instance, Chief Minister Eknath Shinde-led Shiv Sena experienced a setback when former corporator Mangesh Satamkar switched allegiances, dealing a blow to the Uddhav faction.

This year has witnessed Bhushan Desai, the offspring of former minister and Shiv Sena leader Subhash Desai, aligning with the Shinde faction. Consequently, numerous corporations have gravitated towards the group led by Shinde. Notably, the tally now stands at 15 former BMC corporators who have found common cause with the Shinde-led forces.
