Government faces backlash for delaying payments to MGNRE workers ahead of Onam

Thiruvananthapuram: The state government finds itself embroiled in controversy over its failure to provide timely payments to MGNRE (Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee) workers who completed the 100-day work plan. The move has sparked outrage, with critics accusing the government of reneging on its promises and failing to support the very people who depend on job security.

The Finance Department, which had allocated a substantial budget of Rs 19,000 crore for Onam expenditures, is now under scrutiny for allegedly not prioritising the disbursement of salaries and Onam allowances across various sectors. Approximately 52 lakh individuals, hailing from diverse economic backgrounds, rely on the security offered by national rural guarantee workers .

Despite assurances from the government about prompt payments, the grievances of workers who have fulfilled their 100-day work commitment have gone unanswered. This delay has not only eroded trust but also underscored concerns about the government’s commitment to its citizens’ welfare.

Sources suggest that the Finance Department is currently grappling with increased financial burdens. However, critics argue that this should not serve as a pretext for withholding payments from workers who have diligently contributed to the state’s development. The government’s repeated promises to ensure salaries and bonuses for all sections of society during Onam have seemingly fallen flat, leading to accusations that it has once again failed the common people.
