ERNAKULAM: It is reported that in a major breakthrough in marine fisheries, a team of scientists at the ICAR-Central Marine Fisheries Research Institute (CMFRI) has successfully decoded the entire genome of the Indian oil sardine, a popular food fish. This marks the first time that the genome of a marine fish species from the Indian subcontinent has been decoded, according to CMFRI.
Dr. A. Gopalakrishnan, the Director of CMFRI, hailed this achievement as a significant milestone in the field of Indian marine fisheries. He underscored the importance of the decoded genome as a valuable tool for gaining insights into the biology, ecology, and evolution of the Indian oil sardine (Sardinella longiceps).
Notably, Dr. Gopalakrishnan had previously received the VASVIK (Vividhlaxi Audyogik Samshodhan Vikas Kendra) Industrial Research Award for the year 2020 in the Agricultural Sciences and Technology category.
