Idukki: In a significant breakthrough in the ongoing battle against the illegal sandalwood trade, authorities have apprehended a youth, identified as Bineesh and hailing from Elappara, on charges of smuggling sandalwood. The arrest came after the forest department received a tip-off, leading to the confiscation of 25 kilograms of prized sandalwood and the impounding of the vehicle used for the illicit operation.
During subsequent questioning, Bineesh disclosed to the police that the sandalwood logs had been pilfered from a private land near Helibaria Chappat. This revelation has raised concerns among authorities, prompting them to investigate whether Bineesh is connected to a broader network involved in recent sandalwood thefts.
