Washington: A national highway in the American state of California will soon bear the name of an Indian police officer Ronil Singh, who bravely sacrificed his life in the line of duty. The California Highway will be officially known as the Corporal Ronil Singh Memorial Highway, a touching tribute to the fallen officer. Ronil’s wife and son were present at the naming ceremony of the road, honouring his legacy of service and sacrifice.
In 2018, Ronil Singh tragically lost his life when he was shot dead by an illegal immigrant. Ronil had his roots in the town of Naitata in Navua, Fiji, and he moved to California with his family in 2003, where he pursued his dream of becoming a police officer.
After attending the Police Academy, Ronil Singh fulfilled his aspiration to serve by joining the Newman Police Department in California in 2011. On December 26, 2018, tragedy struck when Ronil Singh lost his life during a routine vehicle inspection in Newman, California. He was fatally shot by Paulo Mendoza, a 31-year-old Mexican illegal immigrant, in an incident that shook the community and highlighted the challenges of immigration enforcement. Police arrested Mendoza three days after the incident.
