India misses chance to top ODI rankings after Asia Cup loss to Bangladesh

New Delhi: India’s hopes of claiming the coveted top spot in the MRF Tyres ICC Men’s ODI Team Rankings were dashed after suffering a narrow defeat against Bangladesh in the Super Four clash of the Asia Cup. Prior to this crucial match on September 15, India held the second position with 116 rating points, just two points behind Australia, the top-ranked team with 118 points.

The scenario was clear: for India to ascend to the top of the ODI rankings, two conditions needed to be met. Firstly, India had to secure a victory against Bangladesh in the Asia Cup Super Four match, and secondly, they relied on South Africa to triumph over top-ranked Australia in the penultimate ODI of their five-match series.

While one of these scenarios played out as India had hoped, with South Africa delivering a resounding 164-run victory over Australia, the other did not go in their favor. India faced an unexpected defeat at the hands of Bangladesh, leaving their ranking aspirations unfulfilled.

This unexpected loss not only cost India a chance to lead the rankings across formats but also resulted in them sliding to the third position with a rating of 114. Australia, the current leaders, maintained a slim margin with a rating of 115.259, while Pakistan, now in the second position, had a rating of 114.889.

Even if Australia loses their final ODI against South Africa and India emerges victorious in the Asia Cup, India would still fall short of claiming the coveted No. 1 ranking. In such a scenario, it would open the door for Pakistan to ascend to the top spot.

The fierce competition for the pinnacle spot in the ODI Team Rankings continues as India is set to host Australia in a three-match ODI series commencing on September 22. This series not only serves as preparation for the upcoming World Cup but also determines who will hold the coveted title of the No. 1 ODI side going into the World Cup.

Recent developments have seen a tight race for the top position in the ODI Team Rankings, with India, Pakistan, and Australia all vying for the prestigious spot during the Asia Cup and Australia’s ongoing ODI series against South Africa. Pakistan briefly claimed the No. 1 spot in late August after a comprehensive 3-0 victory over Afghanistan but subsequently dropped due to losses against India and Sri Lanka in the Asia Cup.
