Thiruvananthapuram: The number of heart patients seeking treatment in government hospitals across the state of Kerala has witnessed a significant increase, surpassing figures from previous years. The data compiled by Nivi, a digital health company, reveals a surge in cases, with Thiruvananthapuram Medical College Hospital alone attending to 40,000 heart patients in the last four months through its Outpatient Department (OP).

Dr. K. Sivaprasad, Head of the Cardiology Department at Thiruvananthapuram Medical College, highlights the gravity of the situation, stating that most hospitals carry out about 400 angioplasties, and among these, 200 surgeries are required for patients admitted in emergency situations.

Tragically, the rising influx of heart patients is accompanied by an increase in the mortality rate, with Dr. Sivaprasad reporting that two to four percent of heart patients do not survive their medical ordeal. With this, health experts attribute the surge in heart-related ailments to an unhealthy lifestyle prevalent in modern society.

In response to the escalating crisis, the Cardiology Department of Thiruvananthapuram Medical College has taken proactive measures. Various awareness programmes have been organised, coinciding with World Heart Day tomorrow, aimed at educating the public about heart health and preventive measures.
