Thrissur: The sacred precincts of Guruvayur temple witnessed a captivating auction event, where a diverse array of items, including 25 kilograms of peacock feathers and 105 exquisite watches, found new owners.
The auction, named Vilakku Lelam (Lamp Auction), commenced on Tuesday, September 26, attracting the interest of devotees and collectors alike. While the original purpose of the auction was to auction lamps, it has now expanded to include a diverse range of items available for bidding during this event. These things, up for auction, were items lost from the devotees and items that were offered by devotees.
Within just a few hours of the auction’s commencement, a collection of 105 alluring watches was sold, fetching a cumulative sum of Rs. 18,644, inclusive of GST. Remarkably, all the watches were acquired by a single bidder. A note-counting machine was also part of the auction proceedings, underscoring the diversity of offerings.
The most captivating items on auction were peacock feathers. 25 kilograms of peacock feathers were kept for auction. A native of Guruvayur secured this for Rs. 11,800. These peacock feathers hold deep spiritual significance.
Over the course of two days, the auction managed to raise a total of Rs. 20.71 lakh. Although named as a “lamp auction,” the event transcended its name by showcasing an impressive range of items that had been offered by devotees over the past year. Among the items auctioned were elephant accoutrements, sacks filled with incense sticks, variety of ornamental lamps, wooden lamps, aluminium vessels, brass-steel pots, plates, wheelchairs, chairs, tyres and large tins of paint.
The auction organised by the Devaswom Purchase Department is being held at the Sree Guruvayurappan Auditorium and it will culminate on September 30, 2023.
