Mumbai: In a wide-ranging operation spanning multiple locations across Bharat, the Directorate of Revenue Intelligence (DRI) successfully confiscated gold valued at Rs 19 crore. Eleven individuals linked to a smuggling syndicate were taken into custody, as confirmed by an official statement on Sunday.

The DRI unveiled that this syndicate was responsible for smuggling foreign-origin gold into Bharat via the Bangladesh border, redirecting it to destinations such as Mumbai, Nagpur (Maharashtra), and Varanasi (Uttar Pradesh).

A well-coordinated operation conducted by the DRI, encompassing Varanasi, Nagpur, and Mumbai on Friday and Saturday, led to the dismantling of the syndicate engaged in the illicit transportation of gold through road and rail.

According to the official release, a total of eleven individuals were apprehended in the operation, with five being arrested in Mumbai, two in Varanasi, and four in Nagpur. The individuals in custody played various roles within the smuggling network, including carriers, passengers, handlers, and the ultimate recipients of the illicit gold.
