San Francisco: An off-duty pilot has been arrested for his attempt to shut down the engines during a flight from Washington to San Francisco. The pilot in question belongs to Alaska Airlines, and the incident took place on Sunday.
The pilot had boarded the aircraft as a passenger. Off-duty pilots are permitted to travel in the cockpit with the captain’s approval. The airline’s official explanation suggests that he was attempting to divert the flight from its planned route. The timely intervention by airline authorities prevented a major accident.
Although the off-duty pilot attempted to shut down the engines, the aircraft landed safely without any further issues. The arrested pilot now faces charges of murder for his actions. At the time of the incident, there were a total of 83 passengers on board.
