Decision on night trading restrictions in Thrikkakkara Municipality Corporation deferred

Thrikkakkara: The anticipated implementation of night trading restrictions in Thrikkakkara Municipality has been temporarily put on hold. Initially, it was expected that a decision regarding the restrictions would be reached during the council meeting held today, but the matter was notably absent from the meeting’s agenda. This decision comes following protests by local business owners and tech professionals in the area.

The proposal to close trading between 11 p.m. and 4 a.m. was made in response to concerns about drug trade and harassment by drug users in the region. As a trial, the restriction was set to be in effect for the next six months. However, Thrikkakkara Municipal Council President Radhamani Pillai had previously indicated that a decision would be made in today’s council meeting.

While some councillors raised the matter during the meeting, the municipal chairman dismissed it by citing media reports and seeking further clarification. The chairman’s stand is that the night trading restrictions are not currently in effect, and a decision will be made after a thorough study of the situation.

Notably, Thrikkakkara is an area with a significant night trading presence, primarily concentrated in food stalls. The decision to impose restrictions had caused concerns among those working in places like Infopark and Smart City, as well as traders. The decision to defer implementation follows strong protests against the original proposal.
