Tel Aviv: The Israeli Defence Forces (IDF) and the Israel Security Authority (ISA) have disclosed a significant development in their latest operational update. A 55-meter-long terrorist tunnel was discovered, situated ten meters beneath the Shifa Hospital complex in Gaza during an intelligence-based operation, according to posts on the IDF’s official social media platform.
The IDF emphasized the defensive features of the tunnel entrance, including a blast-proof door and a firing hole. The update underscored the ongoing narrative of Hamas’ alleged use of Gaza residents and Shifa Hospital patients as human shields.
Contrary to initial reports, the IDF denied issuing an evacuation demand to Al-Shifa hospital, clarifying that they only facilitated the creation of a safe route for those choosing to leave, as reported by The Times of Israel.
As the conflict between Israel and Hamas extends into its 43rd day since the October 7 attack on Israel, the IDF confirmed on Wednesday that their ground operation in Gaza is precise and targeted, specifically focusing on a designated area within Al-Shifa Hospital. The operation is grounded in intelligence information and operational necessity.
Israeli President Isaac Herzog reaffirmed on Thursday that Israel is not targeting hospitals in Gaza. He claimed that Hamas has strategically placed command and control centers beneath hospitals, using them as bases to “shoot and kill” Israeli citizens. Herzog assured that the IDF is taking measures to ensure the continuity of hospital operations without disruption to patients, doctors, or staff.
