NEW DELHI: The 17-day wait is expected to end today, as Neeraj Khairwal, the Nodal Officer for the Silkyara rescue operation, informed that the evacuation of all 41 laborers is anticipated by today. Addressing the media at the tunnel site, Khairwal stated, ‘As of now, we have pushed 55.3 meters of the pipe, clearing rubble and laying the pipe. There’s only a little more distance to cover, possibly around 5 meters, expected to be completed by this evening.’
Earlier today, PM Narendra Modi reviewed the ongoing rescue and relief efforts during a call with Uttarakhand CM Pushkar Singh Dhami. PM Modi inquired about the well-being of the trapped laborers and instructed the Chief Minister to prioritize their safety and that of everyone involved in the rescue operations. CM Dhami also conducted a review of the ongoing rescue operations inside the tunnel this morning.
The relatives of the 41 trapped laborers have been requested to prepare clothes and bags for the anticipated early evacuation. After rescue, the workers are set to be taken to AIIMS Hospital Rishikesh and Chinyalisaur hospital. Meanwhile a green corridor has been established to ensure swift transportation to the Chinyalisaur Community Health Centre, located 30 km from the tunnel.
Furthermore, a dedicated ward with 41 oxygen-equipped beds has been arranged to provide immediate medical care to each rescued worker.
