Thiruvananthapuram: As Christmas and New Year are around the corner, Supplyco finds itself in a critical situation with no respite in the market. Despite the festive seasons are arriving, only chickpeas and coriander are currently available among the usual 13 subsidised essential items. Supplyco employees claim that suppliers are reluctant to participate in tenders for these goods.
The crisis, which began during Onam season, shows no signs of abating as Christmas draws near. Shelves across all Supplyco outlets in the state remain empty, leaving common citizens anxious about the unavailability of essential commodities like rice, sugar, chillies, and coconut oil for months.
The situation is further complicated by outstanding dues to suppliers amounting to crores, discouraging their participation in tenders. There are also growing concerns that the salaries of Supplyco employees might be at risk due to the dire financial circumstances.
