New Delhi: The Indian Pharmacopoeia Commission (IPC) has issued a cautionary alert regarding the usage of the painkiller Meftal, highlighting severe side effects that could affect internal organs and pose serious health risks.

Meftal, an over-the-counter medication accessible without a prescription, is commonly used to cure various discomforts such as headaches, joint pain, menstrual cramps, and high fever in children.

The warning notes the potential risk associated with Meftal, highlighting the possibility of a drug reaction known as Drug Reaction with Eosinophilia and Systemic Symptoms (DRESS). This syndrome manifests when the body strongly reacts to certain medications, presenting as a skin rash and potentially affecting internal organs. The advisory urges cautious use of the medication to avoid such problems.

Healthcare professionals and patients have been instructed to monitor and be vigilant about potential side effects resulting from the use of Meftal. While instances of DRESS syndrome are rare, similar reactions have been observed with other medications falling into this category. Prominent brands in this category include Blue Cross Laboratories’ Meftel, Mankind Pharma’s Mefkind-P, Pfizer’s Ponstan, Serum Institute’s Mefanorm, and Dr. Reddy’s Ibuclin P.
