New Delhi: The Jammu and Kashmir Reorganization (Second Amendment) Bill, 2023 aiming to reserve one-third of the assembly seats for women in Jammu and Kashmir was introduced in Lok Sabha. The bill was introduced by the Minister of State for Home Nityanand Rai.
The primary objective of the bill is to enhance the representation and active involvement of women in the legislative processes of the Jammu and Kashmir assembly. This initiative aligns with the recent enactment of the Constitution (One Hundred and Sixth Amendment) Act, 2023, which mandates one-third reservation for women in Lok Sabha, state assemblies, and the Delhi assembly.
The proposed legislation seeks to extend similar provisions to Jammu and Kashmir by amending the Jammu and Kashmir Reorganisation Act, 2019. The move is part of a broader effort to promote gender inclusivity and empower women in the political arena.
