Pakistan government imposes two-year ban on Pakistan Cricket Board over PSL media rights deal

Lahore: The Pakistan Government has issued a two-year ban on the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) for the alleged sale of media rights to broadcast and telecast the Pakistan Super League (PSL).

The ban comes in the wake of the PCB’s failure to inform the government about the schedules for the ninth season of the PSL. The sports department has formally notified the PCB, asserting that, to do any media deals they must receive prior approval from the government.

Anticipating a substantial income from the sale of media rights, the PCB now faces a severe setback with the ban in place. The scheduled auction for the broadcasting rights of PSL has also been delayed in light of the government’s decision. Pakistan’s caretaker Prime Minister Anwaar-ul-Haq Kakar and PCB’s Cricket Managing Committee head Zaka Ashraf have engaged in discussions regarding the issue; however, no final decision has been reached as of now.

As a result, the PCB has communicated to the respective bidders regarding a schedule adjustment, shifting the submission of technical bids to early January. The bidding process for the broadcast and media rights for the Pakistan Super League (PSL) has been extended by two weeks.
