Mumbai: The indigenously developed warship of the Indian Navy, INS Imphal, was officially commissioned at a ceremony held in Mumbai. Defence Minister Rajnath Singh, Maharashtra Chief Minister Eknath Shinde, and Chief of the Naval Staff Admiral R Hari Kumar were present at the occasion.
INS Imphal is the third of the four Visakhapatnam-class destroyers, a series designed and developed entirely by the Indian Navy. Classified as the P-15 Bravo class, or P-15B, these destroyers represent an upgraded version of the P-15A Kolkata class. INS Imphal holds the distinction of being the first warship named after a city from the northeast region of Bharat. The warship was initially approved in 2019 by then-President Ram Nath Kovind.
As the most advanced stealth-guided missile destroyer in its class, INS Imphal has many specifications. Capable of reaching speeds of 56 km per hour, the warship is equipped with a suite of sophisticated weapons and sensors. It has the capability to launch the BrahMos cruise missile, recognised as the world’s fastest supersonic cruise missile.
