Ernakulam: The police have included the principal and two teachers in the list of accused individuals related to the Cochin University of Science and Technology (CUSAT) stampede, which resulted in the tragic deaths of four people. The charges filed against them include involuntary manslaughter. Deepak Kumar Sahu, the principal of the School of Engineering, has been identified as the first accused, while Girish Kumaran Thampi and Vijay, who were responsible for overseeing the tech fest, are also named as accused.
The incident unfolded on November 25, 2023, during a Tech Fest named ‘Dhishna’ on the CUSAT campus. A stampede occurred at an amphitheatre ahead of a concert by singer Nikhita Gandhi, claiming the lives of four people, including three CUSAT students. The incident took place as those standing outside sought shelter from the rain, rushing into the amphitheatre despite restricted entry to the concert.
The surge of people led to a chaotic situation, causing individuals on the steps at the entrance to fall, with others subsequently falling on top of them, leading to the deaths of four individuals.
