Thiruvananthapuram: In a statement released by his family through the German press agency DPA, it has been confirmed that football icon Franz Beckenbauer has died at the age of 78. The former West Germany and Bayern Munich player was widely celebrated as one of the greatest footballers in history, leaving behind a legacy of remarkable achievements.

Beckenbauer, who began his football journey as a central midfielder in the youth system of Bayern Munich in 1964, transitioned into a defensive role that defined his illustrious career. With 104 caps for West Germany and 427 appearances for Bayern Munich, Beckenbauer etched his name into the annals of football history.

During his 13-year tenure with Bayern Munich, Beckenbauer made history as the only defender to clinch the prestigious Ballon d’Or twice, in 1972 and 1976. His exceptional skills and contributions led to recognitions such as being named in the World Team of the 20th Century in 1998 and the FIFA World Cup Dream Team in 2002.

A defining moment in Beckenbauer’s career came in 1974, when he played a pivotal role in West Germany’s triumphant World Cup campaign, securing a hard-fought 2-1 victory over Johan Cruyff’s Netherlands in the final. His trophy cabinet also boasts the 1972 European Championship with West Germany and three European Cup triumphs with Bayern Munich.
