Male: In the midst of a diplomatic row between Maldives and New Delhi, President Mohamed Muizzu faced a huge setback as the pro-Bharat opposition Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) secured a resounding victory in the capital’s mayoral election on Saturday.
Adam Azim, the candidate from MDP, emerged victorious as the new mayor, succeeding Muizzu, who had resigned from the position to pursue the presidential elections last year. The MDP, led by former president Mohammad Solih, known for his pro-Bharat stance, had previously lost to Muizzu, a leader with pro-China inclinations, in the presidential elections.
According to reports from the Maldives, Adam Azim, former CEO of Maldives Transport and Contracting Company (MTCC), took a commanding lead in the mayoral race. With 41 boxes counted, Azim secured a substantial advantage with 5,303 votes.
