Kingwood: The world of athletics mourns the loss of Canadian pole vault champion Shawn Barber, who passed away at the age of 29 at his home in Kingwood, Texas. The news of Barber’s untimely death was confirmed by his agent, Paul Doyle, via Instagram, citing health complications.

Barber, who set Canada’s record in the men’s pole vault in January 2016, had a remarkable career on the track. In 2015, he clinched a gold medal at the Pan American Games held in Toronto, showcasing his prowess in the sport. The same year, Barber achieved victory at the IAAF World Championship in Beijing, China, further solidifying his status as a pole vaulting sensation.

The talented athlete also reached the finals of the 2016 Olympics in Rio de Janeiro, adding to his list of accomplishments on the international stage. Barber’s career best boasted an impressive six metres in the pole vault, marking the highest performance by a Canadian athlete in the realm of athletics.

During his college years, Barber was an integral part of the University of Akron’s track and field team, showcasing his dedication and skill in the sport. As news of his passing circulates, the athletic community reflects on the legacy of a champion who left an indelible mark on the world of pole vaulting.
